You are mixing apples and oranges. VC and mergers etc.. are not reasons prices are increased. Price is a component of what the market will bear. Value is another issue altogether.

The short discussion on implementation costs is close. Implementation costs are not necessarily hidden but the reality is complex systems require time, expertise, management buy-in, training etc… All these have a costs involved. For example, training is a very difficult sell in todays economy. However, without implementations are almost guaranteed to fail.

The one valid paragraph you have is regarding TCO. ON this subject you have hit the nail on the head. Perhaps this would be a better direction for you to pursue when writing.
