The history of the IWMS market

Corporate Real Estate expert and Lucernex CEO, Mike Nuzum (see Mike’s management summary here) along with IWMS expert and Lucernex President, Joe Valeri (see Joe’s management summary here), discuss their perspective on the history of the IWMS market.

Typically in our blogs, we attempt to write an impartial analysis of the subject at hand and save the Lucernex marketing for the end. However, in this blog, the story of the IWMS market is really the story of Lucernex so there is no way to separate the Lucernex details from the body of the blog.

This is the story of how the IWMS market came about, from the perspective of several industry experts who work at or with Lucernex. As IWMS is a consolidation of the Facilities Management, Facilities Maintenance and Corporate Real Estate software markets, I am very sure there are other opinions from other vendors, especially from outside the retail part of this market, but here’s our viewpoint. Why integrated Lease Analysis improves an IWMS

Lucernex expert and President Joe Valeri (see Joe’s management summary here) discusses how integrated lease analysis improves an IWMS.

It is a big step for many companies to implement an IWMS and to simply establish a single source of all location data. It can advance a companies effectiveness substantially with that first step of IWMS use. Once this has been done successfully though, users of IWMS systems start to come up with ideas of how the system can be used to further improve their internal processes and evaluate success. By having all the data in one place, hopefully organized by location, users can begin to apply decision tools to make better decisions.

What Makes some IWMS software so expensive?

The term “Integrated Workplace Management Systems” or “IWMS” was coined by Michael Bell formerly of The Gartner Group. This new term was then used as the basis for producing an IWMS market assessment including a Gartner Magic Quadrant. This type of assessment is commonly produced by Gartner to compare technology vendors in many industries. Without a common term, in this case IWMS, there would have been no way to ‘lump’ a bunch of vendors together into a comparison document. In reality, at the time the term was coined, the vendors thrown into the IWMS bucket were very dissimilar and often addressed very different markets. Since then, however, using the IWMS blueprint provided in the IWMS market analysis containing the Magic Quadrant, the vendors have actually enhanced their products, changed messaging and in some cases merged to better fit the image of “IWMS”. While features of the vendors have grown more similar, they remain different in some very important ways, most notably their expertise in specific customer bases and specific functionality that addresses that base.
